Description of figure:
Two visualizations of swirling flow in a simulated supercell thunderstorm. In the top figure, the location of vortex centers, as determined by a feature detection algorithm, are rendered as cylindrical line segments. In the bottom figure, the diameter of the same line segments are scaled by a quadratic funtion of the vorticity magnitude in order to highlight the regions of more intense rotation. In addition, isosurfaces of vorticity magnitude (in transparent blue) are rendered in order to compare the two different approches towards highlighting swirling flow. An isosurface of vertical velocity (in red) is rendered highlighting the location of the supercell updraft.
